Being A Great Commission Christian

Being a Great Commission Christian
Participants read the following Bible passages then discuss what being a "Great Commission Christian" means to them:

Acts 1:3 – 5 The Promise of the Holy Spirit

"During the forty days after crucifixion, he appeared to the apostles from time to time and proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. On these occasions he talked to them about the Kingdom of God. In one of these meetings as he was eating a meal with them, he told them, Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you what he promised. Remember, I have told you about this before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

Acts 1:6 – 9 The Ascension of Jesus

When the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, "Lord, are you going to free Israel now and restore our kingdom?"

"The Father sets those dates," he replied, "and they are not for you to know. But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

[John 14: 27 "I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid."]

Verse 9: "It was not long after he said this that he was taken up into the sky while they were watching, and he disappeared into a cloud."

Verses 12 – 13: "The apostles were at the Mount of Olives when this happened, so they walked the half-mile back to Jerusalem. Then they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. They all met together continually for prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus."

Acts 2: 1 – 8 The Holy Spirit Comes

"On the day of Pentecost, seven weeks after Jesus’ resurrection, the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like a roaring of a might windstorm in the skies above them, and it filled the house where they were meeting. Then what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability."

Verses 5 – 6 "Godly Jews from many nations were living in Jerusalem at that time. When they heard this sound, they came running to see what it was all about, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers."

Verse 7: "They were beside themselves with wonder. How can this be? They exclaimed. These people are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speak the languages of the lands where we were born!"

[Luke 24: 47 – 49 The Great Commission:

"With my authority, take this message of repentance to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: There is forgiveness of sins for all who turn to me. You are witnesses of all these things.

And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven."]

JOHN 3:16

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life."

"Car Dieu a tant aimé le monde qu'il a donné son Fils unique, afin que quiconque croit en lui ne périsse point, mais qu'il ait la vie éternelle."

Kinyarwanda (substitute with your mother tongue)

How do we know that someone is leaving by the Holy Spirit’s Power?

We read from the Word of God that when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us.

Galatians 5: 22 – 23

"Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."

The desires of our sinful nature

On the other hand, the Word of God tells us that when you follow the desires of your sinful nature, your lives will produce these evil results:

Galatians 5: 19 – 21

"Sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, idolatry, participation in demonic activities, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, divisions, the feeling that everyone is wrong except those in your own little group, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other kinds of sin. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God."

The amazing peace Stephen had when he was being stoned to death.

Acts 7: 55 "But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily upward into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand."

Verse 59 – 60: "And as they stoned him, Stephen prayed, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he fell to his knees, shouting, Lord, don’t charge them with this sin! And with that he died."
