Part 1 - Hygiene

CMI – Village Hygiene Part 1

Objective:  Participants learn about VILLAGE HYGIENE by discussing the following selected passages.

  1. SICKNESS IS CAUSED BY GERMS

Germs are invisible to the naked eye, but a nurse can see them with a microscope.  There are many, many germs and they can be very dangerous.  Once in a body, germs eat the blood of man like jiggers attack chickens that are much larger than them.

  1. GERMS ARE EVERYWHERE, BUT THEY ESPECIALLY DEVELOP IN FILTH

Babies often drag themselves along on the ground where there are a lot of germs.  The germs can enter their bodies and make them sick.  Germs are in the air.  They are everywhere, in a badly kept house, and in the yard where animals drop their waste.

  1. GERMS ARE ALSO IN THE CREEK WATER

Germs also live in water.  They come from animals which dirty the water, or from people who drop their body waste near the river.  Water also allows mosquitoes to multiply.  These mosquitoes then attack people.  People who use this water are exposed to the germs that live in the water.

  1. THERE ARE MANY GERMS IN THE HOMES OF SICK PEOPLE

Imagine three men.  The first one has an infected wound.  The second one has diarrhea and the third is coughing up some spit.  These three men are sick and can transmit a lot of germs.  A lot of germs live in the wound, the diarrhea and the spit of these three sick people.

  1. GERMS ARE EVERYWHERE WHERE THERE IS DUST, DIRT, DARKNESS AND DAMPNESS

A house which is dirty, damp and dusty is full of germs.  Animals and people drop their body waste everywhere and germs start to multiply.  Germs do not like cleanliness.  They also do not like soap, bleach or potassium permanganate.

  1. HOW DO GERMS ENTER YOUR BODY?

Skin protects your body against germs.  If you hurt yourself, or if a mosquito stings you, the germs can enter through the wound or the mosquito bite.

But they can also enter through your body openings, like your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, sex organ, anus and open wounds.

  1. IN ORDER TO STAY HEALTHY, YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST GERMS

Some germs that attack your body and enter it can make you sick.  If a sickness is not treated, germs will multiply themselves very quickly in your body and the sickness will become very serious.

That is why you need to try and avoid the germs that make you sick.  How do you do that?

Many germs are transmitted by flies.  You can protect food from the flies by keeping it in a pan.

Domestic animals can dirty the dishes and transmit sickness.  This is why mother keeps the dishes on high tables, which are easy to build.

  1. BY MAKING FENCES FOR THE ANIMALS, THE VILLAGE WILL STAY CLEAN

In order to protect yourself against germs that come from animals, each family can keep the compound clean by putting the animals in fences.  It is not easy to make fences for animals because you will also need to plan on how to feed them.  But by putting the animals into enclosures, a family can keep their compound clean.

You can also plant your crops around the house where they will be safe from animals as they grow.  If you put the animals in fences, your plantations will produce more food because cows, goats etc. will not be able to eat or damage the plants.
