CMI – Village Hygiene Part 3

Objective:  Participants learn about VILLAGE HYGIENE by discussing the following selected passages.

1.     GERMS ARE STRONGER THAN THE PEOPLE WHO DRINK TOO MUCH ALCOHOL

When alcohol weakens your body, causing you to sleep, germs profit from it in order to develop themselves and attack.

A lot of organs suffer directly from alcohol, like the stomach, the heart, the kidneys which filter the blood, the genital glands and especially the liver.

The alcoholic's body is in a state of great weakness.  This exposes him to sicknesses that shorten his life.  His body no longer has the strength necessary to defend itself against germs.  As soon as he suffers from a little sickness, he struggles to get better.

2.       GERMS ARE STRONGER THAN PEOPLE WHO SLEEP BADLY OR NOT ENOUGH

Your body needs rest in order to stay healthy and to be able to resist the attacks of germs.  In order to ensure a rested body, each member of the family needs a convenient place for sleeping without being crammed together with others in one bed.  It is also necessary to have a regulated lifestyle that respects rest.  Too many evening outings, too many hours of work into the night, will make your body constantly tired.  Then it will not be able to defend itself any longer.

1.       IN ORDER TO BE STRONG AGAINST GERMS, YOU NEED TO BE WELL NOURISHED

Good nutrition means eating enough, but not too much; eating all the foods that your body needs.

-What are the foods that you eat regularly?

-Are all foods the same?

-How can they be classified?

Foods are classified into 3 major groupings:

1.     Foods that build and repair the body:

Meat, fish, eggs, milk, etc.

Certain vegetables:  beans, groundnuts, etc.

2.     Foods that give energy:

Millet, rice, corn, banana, plantains, cassava, sugar, bread, etc.

3.     Foods that help you to protect yourself against sickness:

Cooked and raw vegetables:  tomatoes, lettuce, etc.

Fruit: oranges, lemons, bananas, pineapples, etc.

2.       IN ORDER TO BE STRONG AGAINST GERMS:   YOU NEED TO BE WELL DRESSED SO YOUR BODY WILL NOT BE COLD

Here is what you can do in order to avoid the cold:

-Put on more clothing in the evening when it is windy, etc.

-Do not wear clothes that are wet.

-Especially be sure that children are not cold, because they are more sensitive to the cold than grown-ups.

3.     IN ORDER TO BE STRONG AGAINST GERMS, YOU NEED TO SLEEP WELL

Your body needs to rest every night from the fatigue of the day by getting enough sleep.  For your body to rest well, it must have a good place to relax.  You also need to consider how to protect yourself from mosquitoes that are dangerous and that prevent you from sleeping well.

4.     CLEANLINESS OF THE VILLAGE AND OF THE DISTRICT DEPENDS ON EVERYONE

Here are several points to ensure the cleanliness of the village or the district:

-Keep huts and compounds clean.

-Develop community watering places.

-Ensure that each household has and uses a toilet, a shower and a garbage hole.

-Keep animals in fences.

-Fight against sicknesses; isolate people with contagious diseases.

-Organize yourselves at the village level in order to run a "family pharmacy".

-Ask for help from health training personnel from the community clinic.

-During large epidemics, ask for the help of a vaccination team.

5.     A HOME MUST BE ORDERLY IN ORDER TO BE CLEAN

Let us look at how to make our homes clean:

-Keep up each plot of land.

-Put up a clothes line.

-Have drinkable water in the house and take good care of it so that it does not get contaminated with germs.

-Clean dishes well.

-Protect food from germs.

-Put clothes away when they are clean and dry.

-Use mosquito nets, etc.

6.     EACH PERSON MUST FOLLOW THE RULES OF CLEANLINESS

Stay healthy by living according to the rules of hygiene:

-Wash yourself completely every day.

-Wash your clothes.

-Wear enough clean clothes to stay warm.

-Get enough rest.

-Eat a balanced diet.
