Using Bible Verses in Prayer

Objective: Participants practice using Bible verses in their prayers.

"Biblical prayer is crying to God out of the depths; it is the pouring out of the soul before God."

1 Samuel 1: 15 Hannah praying for a son: "I am pouring out my heart to the Lord."

Psalm 88: 1-2: "O Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried out to you day and night. Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry."

Psalm 130: 1-2 "From the depths of despair O Lord, I call for your help. Hear my cry, O Lord. Pay attention to my prayer."

Psalm 142: 1-2 "I cry out to the Lord; I plead for the Lord’s mercy. I pour out my complaints before him and tell him all my troubles."

Lamentations 2: 19 "Rise during the night and cry out. Pour out your hearts like water to the Lord. Lift up your hands to him in prayer."

Matthew 7: 7-8 "Keep on asking and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on looking, and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks finds. And the door is opened to everyone who knocks."

Hebrews 5: 7 "While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could deliver him out of the death. And God heard his prayers because of his reverence for God."

What do these prayers have in common? They are PASSIONATE, PLEADING TO GOD, EVEN WRESTLING WITH GOD.

Prayer: "Address of God in word or thought involving praise, adoration, thanksgiving, confession, petition and intercession."

Prayer in Biblical or evangelical spirituality:

  • Experience of God-forsakenness;
  • Sense of the presence of God;
  • Inspired by both the felt need of God and gratitude for his work of reconciliation and redemption in Jesus Christ.

Christian prayer is both corporate and individual:

The person of prayer may find God in both solitude and fellowship.

We are called to present personal and individual needs to God, but at the same time, we are urged to intercede for the whole company of the saints.

John 17: 20-21 "I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me because of their testimony. My prayer for all of them is that they will be one, just as you are and I are one, Father- that just as you are in me and I am in you, so they will be in us, and the world will believe you sent me."

1 Timothy 2: 1-2 "I urge you, first of all to pray for all people. As you make your requests, plead for God’s mercy upon them, and give thanks. Pray this way for kings and all others who are in authority, so that we can live in peace and quietness, in godliness and dignity."

The goal of prayer is not absorption into the being of God but the transformation of the world for the glory of God. We pray not simply for personal happiness or protection, but for the advancement and extension of the kingdom of God.

PRAYER

THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH AND OUR CHURCH IN PARTICULAR:

John 17: 20-21 "I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me because of their testimony. My prayer for all of them is that they will be one, just as you and I are one, Father- that just as you are in me and I am in you, so they will be in us, and the world will believe you sent me."

ALL PEOPLE AND THOSE IN POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY:

1 Timothy 2: 1-2 "I urge you, first of all to pray for all people. As you make your requests, plead for God’s mercy upon them, and give thanks. Pray this way for kings and all others who are in authority, so that we can live in peace and quietness, in godliness and dignity."

HEALING FOR THE SUFFERING AND THE SICK

James 5: 13-15 "Are any among you suffering? They should keep on praying about it. And those who have reason to be thankful should continually sing praises to the Lord. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. And their prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make them well. And anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed."

KEEP ON ASKING

Matthew 7: 7-8 "Keep on asking and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on looking, and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks finds. And the door is opened to everyone who knocks."
